Fuzzy Sweater + Os Meus Livros Favoritos de 2019

The first post of the year struck me as the perfect opportunity to introduce a theme I rarely mention here: books. I love reading, and in 2019 I reinforced my reading habits and made amazing discoveries. Reading is a passion, and the more I read, the more I want to read. The books I show today were my favorites from last year (which does not mean they are all new). I'm not sure how many I've read (I just started updating my goodreads a little while ago, so it's not very reliable!), but I feel like I behaved beautifully.

A primeira publicação do ano pareceu-me a oportunidade perfeita para introduzir um tema que raramente menciono por aqui: livros. Gosto imenso de ler, e em 2019 reforcei os meus hábitos de leitura e fiz descobertas incríveis. Ler é uma paixão, e quanto mais leio, mais quero ler. Os livros que mostro hoje foram os meus favoritos do ano que passou (o que não significa que sejam todos novidades). Não sei ao certo quantos li (só comecei a atualizar o meu goodreads há pouco tempo, por isso não está muito confiável!), mas sinto que me portei lindamente.

Foi em 2019 que redescobri o meu gosto pelas graphic novels (romance gráfico é um tipo de banda desenhada em formato de livro). Digo “redescobri”, porque sempre adorei banda desenhada, mas este conceito só foi inserido nas minhas leituras este ano. Comecei pela saga adorável de Alice Oseman — “Heartstopper”, a história de dois rapazes que se apaixonam no high school. É uma história simples, mas que vicia. Não só pelas ilustrações adoráveis, mas também porque queremos que a história desenrole. A desvantagem das graphic novels (para mim), é que acabam rápido de mais! Leem-se em poucas horas.

A versão do livro “The Handmaid's Tale” em romance gráfico está qualquer coisa de incrível. Adorei a adaptação artística de Renée Nault, e penso que qualquer fã do livro precisa de ler esta graphic novel. E ainda sobre o assunto, o novo livro da Margaret Atwood, “The Testaments” foi nomeado como um dos melhores livros de 2019, e já o tenho aqui à minha espera! Já alguém leu?

It was in 2019 that I rediscovered my taste for graphic novels. I say “rediscovered” because I always loved comic books, but this different concept was only inserted in my readings this year. I started with Alice Oseman's lovely saga “Heartstopper”, the story of two boys who fall in love in high school. It's a simple yet addictive story. Not only for the lovely illustrations, but also because we want the story to unfold. The downside of graphic novels (for me) is that they end way too fast! I read them in a few hours.

The version of the book “The Handmaid's Tale” in graphic novel is something amazing. I loved Renée Nault's artistic adaptation, and I think any fan of the book needs to read this graphic novel. And on the subject, Margaret Atwood's new book, “The Testaments” has been nominated one of the best books of 2019, and I have it here waiting for me! Has anyone read it yet?

Foi também em 2019 que conheci a Helena Magalhães e apaixonei-me pela sua escrita. É muito bom conhecer escritores portugueses, e ler os seus dois livros (“Diz-lhe que não” e “Raparigas como nós”) motivou-me a conhecer mais autores portugueses.

Escolhi incluir apenas o “Diz-lhe que não” no meu top de favoritos, porque foi sem dúvida o que mais gostei de ler (ainda que o “Raparigas como nós” mereça igual atenção). Cada capítulo conta uma história diferente, e dei por mim a rir às gargalhadas com determinados capítulos! Os livros da Helena são assim, uma rollercoaster de emoções. Deixem-me as vossas sugestões de autores portugueses a conhecer. 💓

O outro livrinho que estou a segurar na foto — As Serviçais, é uma leitura incrível do início ao fim. É sobre direitos civis nos EUA, em 1960. Na verdade, vi o filme uma série de vezes, e finalmente comprei o livro. Foi devorado! Recomendo vivamente.

Graças à influência da Helena, decidi pegar em clássicos como “Mulherzinhas”. Devorei-o em pouco tempo, e tenho pena de não o ter lido mais cedo! Terminei a sua leitura recentemente, e na altura em que comecei nem sabia que ia sair o novo filme baseado no livro, com a Emma Watson. I'm excited! // It was also thanks to Helena's influence that I decided to take on classics like “Little Women”. I devoured it shortly, and I'm sorry I didn't read it earlier! I finished it recently, and by the time I started I didn't even know the new book-based movie with Emma Watson was coming out. I'm excited! The book I'm holding in the photo above — The Help, is an amazing read from start to finish. It's about civil rights in the US in 1960. In fact, I've seen the movie a number of times, and finally bought the book. It was devoured! I highly recommend it.

Ler sobre a Segunda Guerra Mundial (e outros assuntos do mundo real) será sempre um dos meus temas favoritos. Por mais livros que leia relacionados com o holocausto, estou constantemente a aprender coisas que desconhecia. São livros fortes e difíceis de imaginar como uma realidade, sem o deixarem de ser. Li algumas novidades de testemunhos de sobreviventes de Auschwitz, mas foram dois os que mais me marcaram: O Rapaz que Seguiu o Pai para Auschwitz e o Tatuador de Auschwitz. O primeiro é especialmente detalhado e forte — a história de um pai e de um filho que viveram anos a fim em campos de concentração. E o segundo a história de um casal que vive o início do seu romance em Auschwitz.

Reading about World War II (and other real world subjects) will always be one of my favorite topics. No matter how many Holocaust-related books I read, I am constantly learning things I didn't know about. These books are strong and hard to imagine as a reality, without ceasing to be. I read some new books from Auschwitz survivors' testimonies, but it was these two that struck me most: The Boy Who Followed his Father into Auschwitz and The Auschwitz Tattooist. The first is especially detailed and strong — the story of a father and son who lived in concentration camps for years. And the second is the story of a couple who live the beginning of their romance in Auschwitz.
